Email Marketing – Advanced Methods for Getting List Opt-ins

If you build it, they will come… sometimes.

Creating an opt-in page for your email list with a high value freebie and driving traffic to it like crazy usually works pretty well in growing a list. This is the standard method online marketers have used and with great success. But if you really want to grow a list fast, here are some other ways you can boost your sign-ups.

Make Messages Sharable

Add share buttons to make your email messages sharable. When one of your subscribers enjoys a message, they can share it across their social networks. This gives non-subscribers a taste of the quality you offer and the benefits of joining your list. It also works as social proof because it’s the potential subscriber’s friend, not you, that’s recommending it.

Make Your Freebie Sharable

The same goes with the freebie you offer on your opt-in page. If you offer a free eBook for signing up, make it free and sharable. It’s a freebie anyway so it doesn’t cost you anything if people are giving it to their friends. The key is that at the bottom of every page, you put a short call-to-action and a link to your sign-up page. You can even offer another freebie within the book as a thank-you for signing up, or as further enticement to sing up.

Get Testimonials from Current List Members

Ask current list members to write you a short testimonial that you can use on the opt-in page and anywhere else you’re promoting your list. Again, this is social proof at work. The key is that the testimonial needs to be honest and real. Identify those who, through their feedback, have told you that the list helped them. You can also reach out to influencers who have a lot of people listening to them.

Create an Online Archive

Take past list messages and create an online archive. Put a sign-up form on the sidebar and add a sign-up page to the site. Drive traffic to the site and promote it as a place where people can get their problems solved. The content in your ‘archive’ offers a taste of what people will get from your list.

Make the Rounds of Offline Events

There’s still no better communication than face-to-face. Whenever you attend offline events or networking functions, tell people about your list. Put a link to the sign-up site on your business card or, even better, a QR code that will sign up the user automatically. All they need to do is scan the code and they’re signed up.

Take out Ads

Finally, online ads are a great option for sending a sudden burst of traffic to a website and the same goes for your opt-in page. This means spending money, of course, but online ad networks let you target the ads very narrowly. You can have your ads appear to those in the market who would be most interested.

Creating an opt-in page and offering a freebie is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many ways to get more sign-ups and to prequalify them even before they enter their name and email address.
