How to Blog – The Elements of a Great Blog

Your blog is important for your business website. It constantly adds fresh content, which search engines like Google love. It also offers a way to add new keywords to your site, which boosts its ranking in the search results. Even more importantly than search engines, it draws real human traffic to your site which will then check it out to see what else it has to offer.

Blogging is not hard at all to do. Here are the elements that make up a great blog.

Consistent Schedule

It doesn’t matter how often you blog (although of course, more is better), but your blogging schedule should be consistent. If you decide to do it weekly, stick to writing a weekly post. This is good for your site’s SEO and also great for your readers, who will come to expect a new post on a regular basis.

Titles and Headlines

Spend some time on your posts’ titles and headlines. These are important because they’re what get people to read your blog. People online have tiny attention spans. They need a good title to hook them into reading the rest. A good title makes it stand out. The same goes for your first paragraph, which serves to draw the reader in and leads them to read the rest.

Use Images

Include at least one image with each blog post, even if it’s just a generic stock image. A blog that’s all text can be intimidating and dull for readers. They naturally want an image to look at as they read. Even a very simple stock image will work wonders to retain readers. If you don’t want to pay for a stock image site, use creative commons images that are licensed for use. Even better, take your own pictures and upload them.

Bullet Points

Whenever you’re listing anything, break the list up into bullet points. Bullet points make for extremely easy reading and skimming. This is important when the reader is reading on a computer screen, where huge blocks of text are difficult. This is an easy way for people to take in your blog posts’ important points at a glance.

Your Own Voice

Find your own voice and use it. People love a blog that has a personal tone. They’re bored by online writing that sounds formal or textbook-ish. Of course, you don’t want to make spelling or grammar mistakes, but be yourself. The point is to communicate your personality and ideas with your readers. That’s the kind of connection people are looking for online.

Engage with Your Audience

There’s a reason blogs have comments sections. You should actively encourage comments and respond to them whenever readers leave them. This is what makes a blog interactive and engaging, and engagement drives readership and sharing. You should also include social media buttons to make your blog more interactive.

Once these elements are in place, your blog readership will grow. Focus on the problems, questions and concerns your target market has, and use your blog to answer these issues for them.
