Whenever you talk about optimizing websites, it’s Google this and Google that. Internet marketers talk as if Google were the only search engine out there or the only way for people to find their websites. Why do we place so much emphasis on Google?
The Importance of Search Engines
Search engines are how most of the world finds your website. There are other ways to search, including social search, a growing trend where people are looking for what they need online using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But baby boomers and older adults are driving online shopping and they’re less likely to use social media. They use search engines.
Ranking for specific keywords on search engines is important and every position matters. Internet marketers are obsessed with getting on the first page of search results because most people never look at the second page. If your site appears on the first page, you can expect a great deal more traffic than if you were even at the first position of the second.
In terms of search engines, Google is simply the best. There just isn’t as much traffic from other sites. Google is the most popular and most used search engine worldwide with around 80 percent of searches globally. One reason it’s so widely used is that it offers the best user experience. In non-tech speak, this means it gives you what you’re looking for.
People of all walks of life use Google to find all kinds of information. No matter what you’re selling and to whom, your target marketing is looking for your product using Google.
But if you design a website with Google in mind, what happens in the future when it’s no longer number one? Of course nobody knows for sure, but Google will probably stay on top for years to come. The company invests a great deal of money and resources on staying on top. It’s constantly updating its algorithms so that it gives users the search results they’re looking for.
How Important Is SEO Really?
Google and search engines are important, but how important really? Lots of businesses make the mistake of not investing enough in search engine optimization. But some websites go overboard thinking that SEO is all there is to online success.
While SEO is important to any online marketing strategy, what’s more important is that your site offers a good user experience. It should have helpful content, be easy to navigate and offer a real product that solves problems. All the SEO in the world isn’t going to make a lousy website a success. And there may come a day when Google and other search engines aren’t so important. Build a good site that offers good content and it will survive the test of time, even if search engines don’t.
